I keep hearing that I should vote for the lesser of two evils. Why not the least of three? Sure, Johnson’s foreign policy question was probably embarrassing for him, but I can’t see Trump answering it any better. He’d probably just redirect. Clinton could give a compelling answer, but you’d be hard pressed to believe it.

My first choice dropped out long ago. I don’t think there’s anyone left who would be good at the job. But if we’re talking about “serious” candidates, neither of the front runners fits the bill.

Besides, I can’t decide who I’m afraid of more, so I guess I just won’t vote afraid.

I’ll be voting for Jill Stein, as I did in 2012.

She panders too much to the woo-mongers in her party, but her party has shown response to pushing the woo-mongers out with the 2016 revisions to their platform, and I would like to see the Green Party be brought up to be a credible left-wing party here in the US - right now, we have an extreme right-wing party and a center-right party.

Now, you might say that I’m throwing my vote away, but if Stein gets at least 5% of the national popular vote, the Green Party gets access to federal election funding in 2020, which will help bolster their position as a truly left-wing party, and might even help them get downticket wins. (This is also why, if you’re not in a swing state (I am, but I cannot vote for Clinton in good conscience), it’s throwing your vote away to vote for either Clinton or Trump - if your state is safe, vote for the third party of your preference, to get them funding for 2020, and pressure your mainstream party of preference.)

Downticket, I’ll be voting for Democrats, though - there’s nothing meaningful available for the Green Party right now from voting for them downticket, and I think the best way to stop Trump in case he does win will be a congressional majority for the Democrats.

The plurality system prevents a third party from ever winning. A vote for a third party goes one of two ways: a) You’re jusy throwing your vote away or b) You’re voting for the Rep/Dem candidate you didn’t want to vote for.

The two-party system is literally the only way that elections in the US will ever work. And it will never, ever change (unless the entire country filled every seat in Congress with someone who isn’t a career politician and doesn’t care about reelection, because it requires an amendment to the Constitution)

Except that it may pressure the Democrats to pull left. Or, if the Democrats continue their veer rightward, it may cause the Greens to replace the Democrats as the default left wing vote, and the Democrats to replace the Republicans as the default right wing vote.

Myself, I’m weakly pro-nuke, I’d say.

They’re clean, zero CO2, stable base load (something that’s important especially with added renewables, to have stable base load) on the grid... when done right.

At the same time, though, there’s other ways to get zero CO2 stable base load, through energy storage, and the problem with nukes is... they’re hard to do right (yes, I know, thorium’s easier to do right), and I’m not certain that the US has any way to run a nuke that’s safe from how humans fuck up nukes. Political cycles make the government a bad choice - in 2-6 years, a well-meaning government can be overridden entirely, and then the nukes are in the hands of a government that tries to do it cheap and causes a disaster. Corporate ownership is similarly bad - there’s a profit motive, so they do it cheap from the start. About the only way I could see to do it is if they’re owned by universities, where they can be isolated somewhat from both government and corporate pressure (basically treating the nukes like tenured professors), but...

As a result, while I’m pro-nuke, I don’t exactly have a problem with anti-nuke people.

I guess you’re right if you disregard a huge portion of US history when more than two political parties vied for the presidency.

Maybe a vote for a third party is also c) a desire to return to this, d) a refusal to participate in this absurd mockery which is trying to pull apart a country I grew up loving.

Maybe it’s just a protest, but when my “legitimate” options are both dug from the bottom of a septic tank, I believe it’s the only way I can make my vote matter.

All I see on the ballot this year is disaster.

But American politics is about escalation. If Clinton doesn’t win, why, in 4 years, we need a Clinton to out-Clinton Clinton! We need a Trumpier Trump!

The thunderstorm isn’t going to pass. They’re just going to get worse and worse. I’m not going to waste another vote (like I have in the past), hoping we’ll get someone decent next time. If I get to choose between casting a vote for one of two sides of the authoritarian coin and casting a vote to send a message, I’m going to send a message. At least my conscience will be clear.

The Electoral College and “first past the post” system has existed since the Constitution was drafted. More than one party has run for many years, but only 2 of them have ever had a chance at winning. The third would be either a spoiler party for the party that should have won or have no overall effect on the election. Basically, third party votes don’t mean jack unless we switch to single transferable vote. And a third party winning wouldn’t matter unless we switched to proportional representation in Congress, since a third party POTUS would have no support from either side.

Kinja'd!!! Sam > Andy Sheehan, StreetsideStig

It’ll be a close race, though. Polls before the election don’t mean much if nobody goes out and votes. And I predict record-breakingly low turnout this year. I’d say Trump still has a shot, just because he’s fired up his diehard supporters to go to the polls a lot more than Clinton has. But if people actually go out and vote, it’ll be a landslide victory for Clinton.

Exciting stuff.
